Hamster

A little background on Karly……
She LOVES animals
Performs daily surgeries on all the webkinz in this house- I keep finding my sewing kits out and the animals wrapped up
She has a heart of gold and a special love toward animals
She is so stinking persistent and she will NOT take NO for an answer
She begged for 5 years to get a dog…that is 5 years of strait persistence

Karly is working us over so hard for a hamster (don’t tell her) but we are actually considering getting her one. She is so responsible and has been studying all about them. Which ones stink, what “wet tail” is, when to take it to the vet, how to do CPR on it. Yes- you heard me right! I told her “if” she ever gets one and it gets any of these symptoms then may it RIP! Just ask her about her last dog Sammy (may she RIP)- sorry to you animal lovers out there.

So Mike and I are getting used to climbing into bed and being greeted with a sweet love note from our kids (we love them). Well, the last few months they are all from Karly and they are all about a hamster. I just had to share the one we got last night. We just love her! We know that as she gets older her persistence is really going to be one of her greatest strengths!

Dear Mom& Dad,
I’m sorry I keep bugging you about it but I can not help it! I am desperate, I need help! All my friends talk about are their hamsters and all I think, dream, talk, and care about are hamsters right now. I will make a deal with you, I buy the hamster and it’s cage, the most expensive things, and you buy the rest. IT IS KILLING ME!!!!!! I have been getting ready for a hamster from the start! As you might have seen, I have cleared off my dresser. Well that’s for the hamster cage! No I will not spot asking you! If you say No you are not only destroying me, but my friends too! They are counting on me to get a hamster. PLEASE PPPPPPPPLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! I have been researching them for months/weeks! They don’t stink I promise and cross my heart hope to die! I won’t ask for anything else ever again I promise! I will do whatever you say I promise just PLEASE!
Let me get a hamster please! And I promise you it won’t stink! If it does I will spend every cent, I own to fix that problem! It’s worth it!
Love,
Karly
P.S. PLEASE!

Mike and I wrote a nice letter back that she had to meet some serious criteria…stay turned!

The thought of this in my house makes me want to roll over in my grave! What do I do? I just can't have this in my house. We even offered to buy one for her and let her friend take care of it. This is when being a parent is hard. We don't give our kids everything they want.. we don't. We still have held our ground on the cell phone, cat, snake, sleepovers, the list goes on. Our kids are left out on a lot of things but we feel our chocies are the right ones for our kids. So this makes it even harder!

Austin had a hamster for about 6 weeks until it "escaped" while we were in Utah for Christmas. They totally sitnk and his kept getting out of his cage and running aroung the house. Not to mention that it ran on its wheel all night long and woke up the boys. Not to discourage you, Good Luck!

lol! I LOVE YOU! You are not helping Karly's case at all. Oh my goodness- If it got out I would move in with you until they found it! It is a mouse to me. Yuck! I know they stink. Can you keep them in the bathroom? I use so many chemicals in there and oops....I hope I don't bleace it or something:)

LOL- Poor karly her parents are so mean!
BTW- I am with you, I do my best to keep rodents out of the house, there is no chance I will go purchase one and put it there on purpose! Good luck with that one!

Hi Amanda, remember me? I've enjoyed reading your blog several times and had to post a comment on this one. Ya know, hamsters aren't that bad. If you keep the cage cleaned... minimum once a week, the smell isn't really an issue. We got a hamster for my Jami a couple of years ago and I think was a great way to teach responsibility and be able to give praise. It was fun for all the kids. She did great for a year and half and then lost interest, and that's when I insisted it had to go and she gave it to a friend. Now, she's not hounding me anymore. Problem solved! Oh, and we had her keep it in her room so she would put up with any noise. =) They're actually quite fun little things to watch! Good luck!

hmmmm.....luckily Jacob is no where near this stage! My gut feeling is that like anything, if you really don't want a rodent in your house, hold to your ground, in a couple months, Karly will be on to the next thing. Just explain to her that you love her very much but no animals. Let her know that you will do other "special" things for her.....positive reinforcement! Let her pick out another special treat, besides a hampster, and let her work toward it with doing good things!
XOXO

you are a good women to even consider...I hate hamsters, gerbils or any rodent thing and I know that for a fact my kids are going to beg me for one because I hate them so bad. I feel your pain after that letter how could you not want to get her one? I know it would be really hard for me to say no even it I hate them so bad. Good Luck! Let me know what you do so I can use it for future reference.

Amanda - We moved a mile over last Feb. and now we're in the Brookwood Ward, so we won't see Mike and Chris =( I would have liked to say "Hello". You can find my blog through my profile, I think. Good luck with the hamster dilema! Either that or offer her a whole set of "My littlest Petshop" toys and see if she goes for that... tee hee.

Stick to your guns, if my kids hear that your kids have an animal I am toast. I try my best to make them think none of our relatives have any animals at all--especially rodents. ;-)

Although, I loved the letter, it really reminded me of her mother when I lived with her in college!! ;-) "Don't do homework, lets go have fun, let's go to harts and get raspberry ice crystal light (which I'm sure you don't drink now), please please let's go!" Those were the good old days. . .
